Chuck: First Ladies Past and Present.
It's wheels up on the Obama Administration. With the advent of the Trump Administration just days away and the 4th Estate assuring everyone that we will now be led up the path to Golgotha, it seems an opportune time, to assess our newest First Lady, Melania Trump and her predecessor, Michelle Obama.
All First Ladies, like Caesar's Wife, are accorded respect by the Press, Politicians and we Plebes. During Obama's "Farewell Address" where for what seemed like days, he congratulated himself repetitively on his "Potemkin Village" accomplishments, he took a breath, and, in a heart felt moment, spoke to his love for his wife and family. It was touching and sincere, no mean feat for a narcissistic, luftmensch poseur, elevated far beyond his station.
Michelle Obama, acerbic and vociferously opinionated, once said that she was "Never proud of America." (Perhaps she would have been more comfortable as the Queen of Kenya.) Never once in 8 years, convicted of dissimulation, her belligerence was duly noted and kudos from the press followed every utterance. She walked on water.
All First Ladies are clothes horses provided from all the finest designers in the world, Michelle was no exception. She shouldered her gowns as an American Royal and to me, with the verve of violence. She is an impressive human being, who was to be considered in all matters of state. Any designer, to win her approval, must have known, they needed an element of Post Modern Stridence in order to be selected.
A more anodyne First Lady will take her place on the throne this weekend. A Polygot who speaks 5 languages, Melania, a natural and effortless cynosure, will, I believe brings a more beau monde feel to the White House and a more sedate profile. The gowns, the state dinners, the "Affairs Of State" will be far more traditional. The fireworks, extemporaneous explosions and detritus from unexpected conversations and remarks will be the province of President Trump. At least we will know exactly where to focus.
Michelle will no doubt, move on to many appearances on "The View" and other daytime TV programs where she and her cycle sisters can lament the ascendance of vulgarians to high station. Then, as did Hillary, she will run for office, be elected and initialize her quest to retake the throne.
