The question of capacity, funding and cruelty will soon confront Kansas City voters deciding the fate of general obligation (GO) bonds on April 4th. Moreover, an impassioned cry for help has emerged from advocates of Question 3 as they witness public sentiment moving against increasing property taxes despite the city's desperate need for the new animal shelter the vote promises.
To wit . . .
LOCAL ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS FEAR THAT WITHOUT FUNDING FOR A NEW ANIMAL SHELTER QUESTION 3 PROVIDES, KANSAS CITY WILL RETURN TO "CATCH AND KILL' POLICIES THAT EUTHANIZED HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS WITHOUT PET ADOPTION EFFORTS!!!
Here's the word from an insider and the latest campaign blast . . .
"The situation at the animal shelter is dire. It's not even designed to be a shelter. The Chiefs used to store their equipment at the Raytown Road facility not so long ago; the City needs something news because KCMO has simply outgrown the current location . . . Without it, there's just no way we can keep up with the growing needs. We try to place every animal but there's only so much we can do . . . It kills me to say this but, yes, euthanizing more animals is an options that's under consideration in terms of Animal Control."
It may be cruel, it may not be fair but here's the new argument for supporters of this GO Bond effort . . .
VOTE YES FOR KANSAS CITY QUESTION 3 OR DOGGIES WILL DIE!!!
An exaggeration or far too much hyperbole? Probably, but this is the argument local doggie advocates are now forced to make as circumstances grow as desperate as one of those old school Sarah Mclachlan late night SPCA commercials.
Remember that KCMO was killing about 400 animals a month as recently as 2008.
Meanwhile, the many private shelters can hold on to their "no kill" status because they severely limit intake. KCMO facilities won't have that luxury as the weather grows warmer and calls for animal control increase.
The reason for the doggie death threat???
Support for GO BONDS is fading throughout Kansas City.
Question 3 is the ONLY effort that has grassroots support and even those advocates are now confronting push back as the urban core and Northland numbers now trend against increased property taxes across the board.
To wit . . .
Like it or not, Question 3 is now a struggle for the life and death of local animals as supporters are prepared to pull on the heartstrings of voters and portray their opponents as savage brutes if they dare question efforts to sustain the Kansas City no-kill animal shelter policy.
