For about two years Kansas City has endured a horrific spate of carnage on local streets. Last year the number rose to a historic level.
Amid all of this carnage the newspaper often trumpets its ability to bring locals accurate info about the state of current affairs . . . But most of what we have seen is cheerleading directed by City Hall and a lot more sports coverage.
Our blog community notes the now defunct Homicide KC effort as an example of the newspaper's lack of commitment regarding urban core coverage.
The crime map is as dormant as any defunct shopping mall and offers a more accurate view of local news priorities as they publish one story after the next about a baseball star's demise but virtually ignore more than half of the local population coping with a steadily rising rate of violence and murder.
