A homicide case resulted in jail time of a quarter century today but Kansas City media reporting doesn't tell the whole story.
Man sentenced to 25 years for role in murder of Dionte Greene
Here's much better background on this case that's going unreported tonight in Kansas City:
The Guardian: Black, gay and shot dead in his own car: this is another Missouri killing we should talk about
REUTERS: Attacks against LGBT community rarely prosecuted as hate crimes
KCAVP: Call for action in response to the murder of Dionte Greene, a young Black gay man, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Don't blame the media entirely, the prosecutor's overlooked the hate crime aspect of this case. Police did not consider the killing a hate crime.
Still, in the end, the talk of hate crime charges reflect the complexity of politics, cultural logics and the diversity of violence even inside the urban core. It's easy to and requires very little critical thinking in order write-off KCMO murders into demographic trends while considering the circumstances and impact of every instance of deadly violence offers a more complete perspective and reveals the very real human cost of the terrible homicide stats we're confronted with at the conclusion of this year.
